The Poodle Puddle

Poodle Care

It is very important that Poodles are given the appropriate care, to keep them looking and feeling their best. All of our Poodle care products are purchased from Little Stinkers Pet Store in Belleville, Ontario.

Brushing

Poodles should be brushed as often as possible (daily) to prevent tangles and matting. A Poodle brush with wire bristles is very effective for removing tangles and adding extra fluff. Remember to be gentle when brushing.

Bathing

Bathing should be done every 4-6 weeks depending on where your Poodle likes to play. Please look for all natural/very mild shampoos and conditioners as this will prevent any rashes or dryness of the skin. Remember to rinse very thoroughly. Spray on leave in conditioners are a fragrant addition, adding bounce and shine to the hair. Just remember the more natural ingredients are used, the better the product is for your Poodle.

Teeth

It is recommended by most Veterinarians that Poodle's teeth be brushed everyday. However if this is not possible for your Poodle you can always look for "Tooth friendly" chew toys that help prevent gum disease and tartar build up. This will help maintain a healthy mouth in between brushing. Avoid feeding your Poodle soft foods as they are very bad for teeth and gums. There are many flavored tooth pastes that Poodles enjoy. Try to start brushing teeth as early as possible, you will find it gets easier over time. Soft tip tooth brushes are a must. Poodles are just as sensitive as we are!

Ears

Ear drops are a great way to keep ears healthy and clean. Just simply drop into ear and massage the outside, removing any visible dirt or debris with a clean towel or napkin. Keep an eye out for any shaking of the head or excessive scratching at the ear. This could mean an ear infection and should be treated immediately as it causes a lot of discomfort.

Eyes

Poodles sometimes produce tearing around the eyes. To avoid stains or discomfort, wipe eyes often with all natural pet or baby wipes or simply a clean wet cloth. Some breeders suggest feeding your Poodle plain yogurt to help reduce stains around the eyes as this is sometimes caused by poor diet and unhealthy immune system. The best way to prevent and control eye tearing is too keep your Poodles face neatly shaved and/or clean.

Nails

Nail care is also important for your dog and you. When the nail is sharp it should be trimmed. You can bring your Poodle to any groomer for a nail cut. Nail cutters are not very expensive and would save money, just be sure to only remove the tip of the nail. If you cut too short it will cause bleeding.

Anal Glands

Some Poodles have anal glands that need to be released. You will know if your Poodle needs this if you see any excessive scratching of the anus or the most famous "bum drag" often seen across clean carpets. If you are not comfortable with the procedure you can ask for it to be done at your Poodles next grooming appointment. It will not hurt your Poodle, the release of the anal glands involves gently squeezing the outer anus and will result in less swelling and a happier bum for your pup.

Weather

Tiny Toy and Toy Poodles are extremely sensitive to hot and cold temperatures! Avoid keeping you Poodle in very hot temperatures, if possible carry a fan and always make water easy to find. In cold weather such as rain, wind and snow, sweaters and jackets will keep your Poodle warm and comforted. Even water that is too cold can cause a chill and you will see a lot of shaking.  In severe cold winter weather, we reccommend boots and jackets to be worn outside.  If their pads get frost bitten, they will develop chronic foot pain.

Hypoglycemia

Tiny Toy and Toy Poodles are very susceptible to hypoglycemia caused by a deficiency of glucose in the bloodstream. This can be caused by stressful situations and lack of food. Rolling of the eyes, dizziness or seizures, are indications of hypoglycemia. A dose of honey is a very effective way to keep blood sugar up if you notice any symptoms, and your Poodle will love it too. Just give a little dab of honey on the tongue.  It is also important to keep your pup warm!

Love

Remember that Poodles are very social beings. They depend on you to give them unconditional love and attention. Poodles can easily become depressed if their social needs are not met. Some simple ways to keep your darling happy:

Toy and miniature Poodles do not require as much excersize as the Standards Poodles (although they would enjoy this) so try and aim for, at least, a short walk once or twice a day. Walking your Poodle is a great socialization tool. Most people react well to Poodles and it's good to get them used to different scents. If you are disabled or unable to walk, the smaller poodle will usually excersize him/herself just playing around the house.

Make a play date with another small dog, this could be enjoyable for you and your Poodle. Play dates also help with socialization. A play date at a park would be less mess and the fresh air and sunshine will tire them both out!

Whether it be inside or out, Poodles love to play fetch, try to arrange a game time around your schedule.

The activities on the Poodle Care list are also good ways to get in some one-on-one time!  And remember that a well excersized poodle will be a well behaved poodle.  Most behavior problems in dogs, are caused by lack on excersize.
